About the School
Neighborhood House Charter School is a public charter school in Dorchester with a 25 year history of successfully putting students on the path to life success. We serve a diverse population of learners, with more than 800 students across two campuses (Queen Street K1-7 and Centre Street 8-12). NHCS offers a variety of academic and social-emotional supports, including programs for English Language Learners, rigorous academics, a robust creative and performing arts program, physical education and team sports, free breakfast and lunch for all students, and College and Career Readiness programming for all students beginning in 6th grade.
Neighborhood House emphasizes school and community values, and prioritizes hands-on field explorations. High School students go on multiple field trips, camp trips, and unique trips to Costa Rica and Washington, D.C. Eleventh and twelfth grade students participate in the Extended Campus Learning Opportunities program which provides Career Shadow Days at a variety of Boston-based companies, visits to different military and public service sectors, attending lectures, and the ability to design an independent study at a local college.
School Performance
Student performance data displayed below is from Next Generation MCAS results. For more data on schools, please visit the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) website. For schools with multiple campuses, the data below represents all schools in that network, not just the single school, unless otherwise noted. If data is not shown, it is not available for that school (e.g. the school might not serve any tested grades, or be too small to publicly release its scores).
IMPORTANT NOTE: DESE did not issue school, district, or state accountability determinations for the 2019-2020 school year due to the cancellation of state assessments and school closures related to COVID-19. As a result, there is no student performance data available from the state for school year 2019-2020.

We offer a full spectrum of programs at NHCS: general education and full-inclusion as well as partial-inclusion and substantially-separate programs for small groups of students with significant disabilities, ensuring that we are able to meet the diverse needs of a wide range of students. We serve a number of students with a variety of disabilities including autism, intellectual and/or emotional impairments, and learning disabilities. We do not currently have separate programming for students on the autism spectrum, emotional or behavioral disorders, intellectual, physical or sensory impairments. The majority of our students are served inclusively within the general education program.
We have in-house specialists such as a Speech & Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, School Social Worker, School Psychologist, ESL teachers, and Special Education teachers at every grade level. Our 10:1 student-to-teacher ratio and inclusive community means that every student, regardless of need, engages fully with adults and peers each day and completes both grade-level work and work at an individually-appropriate level. Social-emotional support is prioritized for all students, allowing them to reach their full potential in the classroom. -
Specialized English Language Development Classes for Level 1 and 2 ELL students; and Sheltered English Immersion for all ELL students.
