School Registration Timelines by School Type

 

There is no single registration or application process for all 200+ schools in Boston. Here are the steps to apply for each type of schools in Boston and when you need to complete these steps for each type of school for the 2020-2021 school year.
 

Boston Public Schools (BPS)

For students entering K0, K1, 6th, 7th, and 9th grades

When to register: January–February (priority registration)

  • All parents should register their child for these grades.

  • Families are typically notified of their BPS assignment by the end of March.

  • Visit DiscoverBPS.org to get started with your registration.
     

For students entering K2 and all other grades

When to register: February–March (priority registration)

  • All parents should register their child for K2. 

  • Families are typically notified of their BPS assignment by the end of May.

  • Visit DiscoverBPS.org to get started with your registration.
     

Commonwealth Charter Schools

For students entering all grades

When to apply: By the end of February

  • Acceptance into Commonwealth charter schools is determined by lottery.

  • All parents should register their child for the charter school lottery by the end of February. 

  • Families are typically notified about school acceptances and/or waitlist decisions in March.

  • Visit www.applybostoncharters.com to apply for the charter lottery.
     

Private Schools (Religious-Affiliated & Independent)

For students entering all grades

When to apply: Typically December—January (varies by school)

  • All tuition-based schools have their own separate admissions processes and timelines. 

  • Check individual School Profiles on Boston School Finder for more information, or individual school websites for information on key dates, application requirements, and financial aid application deadlines.

METCO

For students entering all grades

When to apply: October–January

  • Beginning in 2019, acceptance into the METCO program will be determined by lottery.

  • Registration for the METCO lottery opens in October and closes in early January.

  • The METCO lottery takes place in early to mid-January.

  • Referral districts enroll students at any time between February and October. Families are notified of their referral district as seats become available, according to their lottery number.

  • Families should move forward with other school plans until enrollment in a METCO district is confirmed.

  • Visit the METCO website to apply for the METCO lottery.
