About the School
The Carter School is a Boston Public School located on the border of Boston's Lower Roxbury and South End neighborhoods. Ranging in age from 12 to 22, our students present with both severe, intensive disabilities and complex health needs. Due to these unique challenges, each classroom is composed of five students, one teacher, and two teaching assistants. Students also work one-on-one with a variety of therapists. This low ratio facilitates our staff's ability to work closely with families, medical providers and social services to cohesively create individualized educational programs. Families are guided through these educational programs with the support of our parent resource coordinator and a social worker. In addition to our students' daily curriculum, we supplement their educational experiences with school-wide events, inclusive district-wide programs and community activities. Two full-time nurses provide direct health care to our students, as well as facilitate the coordination of medical services. We offer a school wide instructional focus of developing lessons and programs that increase each students ability to communicate, so that our students can realize their potential for maximum independence and the highest possible quality of life.
Our students who exhibit severe/profound cognitive delay, physical handicaps, and complex medical conditions, require total personal care. At the Carter school, we implement a Transdisciplinary Model where teachers/therapists work on learning objectives together. Our school community is representative of many races and cultures. Our Outdoor Classroom Sensory Healing Garden adds to learning space, providing access to green activities and outdoor physical movement for our students.
School Performance
Student performance data displayed below is from Next Generation MCAS results. For more data on schools, please visit the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) website. For schools with multiple campuses, the data below represents all schools in that network, not just the single school, unless otherwise noted. If data is not shown, it is not available for that school (e.g. the school might not serve any tested grades, or be too small to publicly release its scores).
IMPORTANT NOTE: DESE did not issue school, district, or state accountability determinations for the 2019-2020 school year due to the cancellation of state assessments and school closures related to COVID-19. As a result, there is no student performance data available from the state for school year 2019-2020.
